When you look at a good-looking person, who is not just beautiful, but also intelligent and articulate and generous and kind, basically the apple of everyone’s eye, what is the first thought that crosses your mind?
Well I don’t know about you, but I definitely think it’s unfair for one person to have all the qualities that are near perfection. And I guess if most of the travel destinations in our country were a person, they would have severe self-esteem issues around Kerala and how supremely it is blessed with some of the most gorgeous places that one could feast their eyes upon.
Case in point- The Periyar National Park
First, let’s get the geography of this place right, shall we?
Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta in Kerala. It is notable as an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve.
The park is often called the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or Thekkady. It is located high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the southern Western Ghats along the border with Tamil Nadu.
It is about 4 km (2.5 mi) from Kumily, approximately 100 km (62 mi) east of Kottayam, 110 km (68 mi) west of Madurai and 120 km (75 mi) southeast of Kochi.
Okay, so we covered the topography, now time for some photography!!! Voila
So was that enough fodder for the nature-lovers soul?!
Now let’s get to how to get there, shall we?
Air: Kochi (Cochin) at 200-kms or Madurai in Tamil Nadu at 140-kms is the nearest airports from Periyar.
Rail: Kottayam at 114-kms is the nearest railhead from Periyar.
Road: Kumily, the nearest town from Periyar is well served by both state and private buses from Kottayam, Ernakulam and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
Now am in no way going to be all typical with anyone aspiring to visit Periyar and make a list of touristy places, but like the pictures above would have aptly suggested, it would be criminal to not go on Safari trips whilst in Periyar!
The availability of Jeep Safari, elephant safari, and those charming boat cruises at Periyar Lake will bring the whole wildlife experience to a whole different high!
Boat cruises calls the best option to check out the wilds of Periyar Sanctuary. The Periyar Lake is adorned with an excellent boating spot for the tourists. Although it is unusual to see many animals from the boats, but you are certain to spot herds of Elephants, Wild Boar, and Sambar Deer by the water's edge along with some water-bodies. The upper deck is best for wildlife viewing when taking a boat cruise, but better turn up half an hour early to get the best seat. To maximize the chances of sighting, the tourists can also take the 7.00 am boat. Besides, they can also book for their own boat (on renting). Oh la laaa!!!!!!
Well with that hope Periyar National Park finds a place in your next travelogue.
On that note
